-The following takes place before Maeve's banishment.-
“HOOOYYY!”
The sounds of a heavy door slamming against the wall and the shrill yell of a rather foppish demon echoed out into the halls of the Rakshasa Castle. A pale skinned, lanky looking demon with long feathered locks of lavish silver hair stepped freely into the abode of the warrior clan as if he had owned it. He had a rather soft and almost girlish face that was completely contrasted by his sharp eyes that were dull and gray. The youthful looking demon was wearing gaudy and overly revealing garments of silk that did little in the way of modesty. Each garment was lined with gold and embedded with jewels. Upon each finger rest an oversized ring as if he were flaunting his excessive wealth.
“Where is the one they call the Swordswoman of Fire? I demand her presence and I do so now!” He stomped, his heel clacking against the cool stone of the castle floor. The demon's listless gray eyes were charged with impatience as he stood in the main hallway of the massive keep, his blatant disrespect in the halls of one of the great demon ancestors displayed either his intense power or his intense stupidity.
After a few moments, a towering dragoness armed with a massive great sword would enter the main hall to greet and meet the request of the impudent demon. The woman had eyes of burning amber, savage locks of ruby hair tied back into a wild pony tail and deep scar cut across her womanly face. Upon her battle hardened but still quite feminine form was a full set of spiked, inky black armor that was accented by contrasting silver trimmings. A long cape that was red as blood billowed behind her at each step she took, on the back rest the Rakshasa family emblem. When she finished her approach she would take her great sword and rest it on the stone floor between her and the much smaller demon before her. The foppish man briefly stared up to the ten foot dragon demon, his face was unfazed by the fact that her sword was nearly as tall as he was.
“Lord Midas, if you were not a man of such considerable stature your blood would be splashed amongst these halls. Now speak plainly, why have you so rudely interrupted my training session?” The dragon hissed as she glared down at the high ranking demon lord. Even if he did have considerable power she wasn't going to take his rudeness lightly. It wasn't the way of her clan to take kindly to disrespect.
“Lady Sorcha, your fiery beauty may just be hot enough to melt my golden heart. Thank you for humoring my request.” The demon responded with the graciousness of a snake. He smirked, showing off his sharp teeth as he bowed in a flamboyant manner for the matriarch of the Rakshasa clan.
“Save your sweet words and silver tongue for the succubi. What do you want?” She snorted before responding flatly. The way her eyes bored into the foppish lord clearly conveyed she was in no mood to deal with his flattery.
“I'll steal you away from your husband one of these days M'lady.” He laughed in a haughty manner. “Though I suppose the reason I came here was rather pressing. I require a word with your youngest daughter, the one who has been gallivanting about as a 'hero'. He laughed softly at the last word, the thought of heroes in their realm seeming foolish and immature. “I trust she is here? Ity'd be quite bothersome if I had to track her down after all...” He spoke, the arrogant smirk forming into a soft, disingenuous smile.
“What has my daughter done to slight you.” Sorcha uttered with a coarse sigh as she thought of her daughter. Surely she had done something foolish to upset or interfere with a powerful demon like Midas (as she was apt to do.)
“Slight me? Why nothing! I merely have a proposition for this young 'hero!' Something that would be mutually beneficial.” He smirked as he crossed his arms. “...Unless you would be willing to aid me in what ails me I'd humbly request that you go fetch her. As I mentioned earlier, this matter is rather pressing so haste would be appreciated.” He said bowing as if dismissing her.
Sorcha scowled at being ordered about but quickly turned and exited the demons presence to go into one of the various rooms that were connected to the grand hallway. After a few moments the much smaller dragoness: Maeve, would approach. A cautious yet curious expression rest on her face as she approached the strangely dressed demon. “I am Maeve Rakshasa.” She introduced herself with a formal bow. “Why have you called upon me?” She asked, formal tone slipping briefly as she spoke honestly.
“Little miss Maeve, I have heard many tales of your heroics and your willingness to help others.” Midas said, giving her a charming smile as he tried to ease whatever cautions she may have had. “I humbly come before you searching for a great hero such as yourself to aid me with an irksome problem...”
“A problem?” Maeve asked, a twinge of red gracing her cheeks as she tried to fight back a blush from being complimented “My mother claimed you were a lord... What could I possibly help you with?” Maeve asked a slight hint of skepticism bleeding into her tone.
“Well, most lords such as myself don't like getting their hands dirty... You see, recently a gelatinous slime has unfortunately decided to gorge itself upon one of my treasure holds. Gold, gems, and diamonds alike have sank into it's gaping maw and I'd like you to prevent anymore from being sent down it's gullet. Slay it, and whatever you can recover from it will be yours, I assume most of what it's eaten should be still stewing away. If you hurry this may end up truly being worth your while.”
Maeve blinked as she considered the request thoughtfully. While the gold could prove to be something worthwhile she wasn't sure if it was worth what she was being asked. “Must I slay the creature? Is there really no other way?” Maeve asked , not exactly fond on the idea of killing unless she absolutely had to.
Midas covered his mouth as he tried to cover his expression but Maeve could feel the utter contempt in his cold gaze. “You would show it mercy? If that were the case I would have no guarantees that it's disgusting mass wouldn't come back for seconds, or thirds! You must strike it down... You won't be able to receive any of the riches buried within if it stays alive anyhow.” In truth, Midas could easily take care of this nuisance. There was something deliciously exciting at making someone surrender their ideals to greed however. He relished in the pettiness of the people who betrayed themselves for a bit of gold. Experiencing this from someone as pure as Maeve would be worth far more to him than the small bit of riches he was losing by coming to her instead of handling his own problem.
“...” Maeve paused, feeling conflicted for a moment as she thought his request over once more. Finally she would nod once. “...Fine, I'll do it. I can't let people doing whatever they please at the cost of others.” She said as she took hold of her sword and steeled herself for her upcoming trial.
“Excellent! However you decide to justify slaughtering the beast is of no concern to me.” Midas said with a smile, as if he was twisting a knife into the girl while he drove the point that she was killing something for him home. “If you follow me I'll lead you to the trove... It isn't too far away, I assure you.”
After a bit of a walk through some of the more mountainous regions of the demon realm Midas would lead Maeve to the mouth of a cave at the base of one of the mountains. Maeve blinked looking around to see there was no doors, gates, or any defenses whatsoever. “...Midas?” She asked glancing aside to the gaudy demon. “Why would you leave your treasure alone in the middle of nowhere without any sort of barrier or defense to protect it? Surely this slime isn't the first to try and take what's inside...” Maeve said, seeming a bit confused.
“Well little miss Maeve, most demons realize that it'd be a mistake to upset a demon of my status. The slime was probably just brainless enough to think that gorging itself upon my riches would be inconsequential. Little did it know, I knew where I could find a hero to kill it.” He snickered, a hint of mockery slipping into his tone as he looked over the dragon once more.
Maeve frowned, this time catching his mocking tone but she decided to shake it off and continue on. The faster she got away from him the better... So with another quick mental reassurance that she would do the right thing she would make her way into the dark maw of the cave.
The air around her was cool and damp as she made her way further into the cave. It was dark but Maeve could still make out the various rock formations that seemed to form overtime in most caves. Though she couldn't see the color she could assume that they were the same dusky red color that the mountains within the demon realm mostly were. She stopped however as she heard a low groaning noise come from further within the cave. Her head fins seemed to wiggle lightly in alarm as she held her sword close to her, not quite sure what to expect. Once the groan seemed to stop she would continue to weave between the stalagmites and stalactites as she headed towards the center of the cave.
“Oooooo....” Another groan came echoing from the center of the cave causing Maeve to tense and stop once more. Her golden eyes narrowed as she tried to focus on seeing further ahead of her but to no avail. “Tch...” She clicked her tongue in frustration but continued on ahead, ready to face what was making the mysterious groaning noise.
The deeper she got the more the cave seemed to twist, turn, and even branch out into a natural labyrinth. To prevent herself from getting lost within it: Maeve began putting little cuts in the stone walls around her with her sword to sort of leave a mark where to let her know she had explored an area before.
As she followed one of the winding turns she would blink as the faint promise of light flickered around the corner. She grinned, ready to get out of the darkness and into the light but that grin quickly faded as the sound of groaning hit her ears once more.
“Wawwaaaa....” The sound of a young woman's pain set alarms of in the dragon's head. Was someone being attacked by the slime?! She felt her breath catch in her throat as the image of something horrible happening to an innocent explorer flashed through her mind. Was the slime dissolving them alive?! Were they being suffocated in it's goop?! She couldn't stand idly by and let the person's suffering continue, so with no more hesitation Maeve charged into the room ahead, following the light with a determined glare.
As she rushed ahead she would end up finding herself in a large room that was absolutely filled with diamonds, gold coins, and other various treasures. The few torches that were lit in the center of the room were all reflected on these treasures in the form of a glimmer that seemed to fill the room with a dream like beauty. Maeve didn't let herself get too distracted by the awe inspiring sight and instead fixated on wherever the person in pain could have been. With her sword drawn and her face contorted to a fierce snarl Maeve crashed through the room ready for a fight.
“H-Hey! Hold up don't hurt me! No-No!” The voice of the young girl called out towards Maeve. Upon pinpointing the source Maeve's gaze would rest on the sight of a curious woman laid about before her. Her entire body was composed of a translucent yellow-orange goop save for her two pale yellow eyes that seemed to glow. She had long 'hair,' and an attractive round face with an upturned nose and a pair of pouting lips. Her figure was ridiculously curvy in all the right places which nearly made Maeve blush at the sight alone. Finally Maeve noticed that her gut was oddly protruding with shadows that she could only assume were the riches she ate.
“I'm so-so sorry if this stuff is yours! Honest I am! I-I didn't mean to eat your shinies! No-No I did not!” The woman stammered in a mix of fear in discomfort. She burped lightly only to have her cheeks turn a darker shade of orange as she glanced away in embarrassment. “...Okay I may have meant to eat a few of the shinies but they looked so good! Yup-Yup! They did! N-Now my stomach feels all woobly wobbly! It does...” The slime groaned in pain as she clutched her bulging gut. “W-Why do they hurt me so... Uggguuuuu....” The slime groaned lowly. Though Maeve couldn't help but notice that the objects seemed to pulse lightly with a strange purple light whenever the slime seemed to double over in pain.
“It's alright. I'm not mad.” Maeve said, deciding to lower her sword. “There's no way you could have known this stuff was owned by someone... There were no doors or locks so it wasn't like you broke in...” Maeve said as she slowly approached the slime before her. She crouched down, resting on the balls of her draconian feet as she inspected the Slime and her extended gut.
“No! No-No! I didn't think it was anyone's honest I didn't! Nope-Nope!” The slime chimed in swaying her hands in front of her face as if to deflect any potential blame coming her way. “But you're not mad? I'm so-so hap-Gwah!!” She groaned, another pulse of purple energy radiating from her gut which caused her to clutch her stomach in pain once more. “...I don't feel so good...Nope-Nope...”
“It's okay... It's okay... I think I can help.” Maeve said nodding her head once before reaching her hand into the gut of the slime. “I think you ate some bad shinies...” Maeve simply said as she looked the slime in the eye. Her hand felt like it was sinking into some thick, cool, and slimy custard... While it seemed a bit gross at the time Maeve seemed happy to help the seemingly ditzy slime. Her cries of plain and misery seemed far more genuine than anything Midas had said.
After a few minutes of digging Maeve would finally retrieve a handful of sticky golden coins and a gem or two covered in the ooze of the goo girl. Maeve blinked looking at the treasures and inspecting them for a moment, trying to find the source of the pulsing glow. After a few moments she would let out a gasp as a strange purple rune would appear before her in a flash only to shatter lifting whatever curse was bound to that set of treasure. “...Midas was probably poisoning whoever got their hands on this treasure.” She frowned, the thought of someone using something as underhanded poison leaving a foul taste in her mouth. She also briefly wondered if Midas would have tried to poison her too...
“W-Waaaa! You stuck your fist in me!” The slime girl blushed darkly as she put her hands on her now deflated stomach.
“D-Don't say it like that! Idiot!” Maeve snapped blushing a bit as she stood up in a huff. “...But you should start feeling better... I took that junk out of you so you should start feeling better pretty soon.” Maeve said scooping up the coins and gems. As she turned away from the slime girl.
“Hey! I do feel better! Yup-Yup!” She beamed suddenly, a wide smile forming on her lips as she glanced over to Maeve. “You saved me! You did! I couldn't even move! So much pain...” She said frowning at the thought. “These shinies are gross! Bad! Blech! Thank you so much! What's your name! I'm Flan-Flan!” She said as she stood up, slithered over and quickly and overly enthusiastically shook her hand.
“Ooo...Well, I'm Mave...It's a pleasure to meet you Flan...” The dragoness blinked, her blush still lingering a bit but a soft smile forming on her face. She frowned however as she remembered what Midas had requested her to do. Though seeing that the 'beast' was actually a ditzy girl with odd tastes Maeve couldn't bring herself to raise her sword against her. “...Listen Flan, I was told to come here and hurt you for eating all that gold and gems... I don't think you'll be safe if you're caught sneaking around here... I think you should find some place to hide for a little bit.” She explained. “I'm going to convince the guy that told me to hurt you that I already did so he won't try to find you but you still have to hide okay?”
“Waaa! A bad guy wanted to hurt me! No-No! That's no good! No-No it's not!” She cried out in a panic. “B-But what if he finds out you lied! What then!” She asked her worry shifting to Maeve quite suddenly.
“...Even if he tries to hurt me he won't find out where you are, I won't let anyone get hurt! You just need to hide okay.” Maeve said, stressing the point once more as she looked into Flan's eyes.
“I can hide! I can hide really good! I'll be safe! You'll see Maeve-Maeve! You'll see!” She said nodding more than a few times. “...Will we see each other again?” The ditzy girl asked, tilting her head lightly as she looked to the dragon with wide glowing eyes.
“Yeah...Sure we can Flan....” Maeve said, smiling softly as she tried to reassure her. She blinked and let out a bit of a cry however as she was suddenly brought into a tight embrace.
“Yeee! Alright new friend! Let's meet again! Yup-Yup! We will!” She beamed happily, not noticing Maeve's awkward struggles from being that close to her. “Now lets leave! Let's Go-Go-Go!”
“Hmph...” Midas frowned a bit as he stood outside the cave thoughtfully. He placed a hand on his chin as he let his thoughts of the following scene play through his mind. “Even faced with an easy target she still went out of her way to save the slime's life...Even if it meant that I'd find out and punish her for it. She did it anyway” A frown crossed Midas' normally smiling mouth. The thought that things didn't go as he intended left him in a sour mood. After a bit of time the frown would eventually shift to a wild grin.
“Oh well, no matter... If she broke today then it wouldn't be too much fun in the long run. So what if she defies me... It'll just make when I finally bend her to my will all the sweeter.” He began to laugh in a haughty manner. “Like it or not Maeve... This isn't the last you've seen of me! I assure you! I'll be back when you least expect it....Make no mistake... I will break you...”
